Debbie Barber is a ceramic artist who holds a BFA in Sculpture from Ilam School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury. Currently living in Tamaki Makaurau, Debbie began establishing her own art practice in 2019 influenced by her mum’s journey with dementia while deeply grounded in a reflective practice considering identity, time, and memory.
These ceramic objects explore connections between her philosophical writings and clay’s materiality. The fragmented pieces reference ones frayed, unwinding mind and skeletal connections made through vast memory gaps. Embedded in the discipline of domestic ware, the clay’s spoil creates a ceramic vocabulary. These chance forms describe the space between the potter and the pot, surpassing the pot as the desired outcome in this process, thus recreating form and purpose.
