Max Thomson studied at Whanganui Technical College, later working as a professional musician in Tāmaki Makaurau before a 24-year career in photography. His ongoing photographic focus on flowers, trees, landscapes, and light now underpins fifteen years of full-time painting and exhibitions, including Into The Blue at Black Asterisk (2018). Thomson’s works evoke tranquil, half-glimpsed garden spaces around Devonport—moody, painterly scenes of shrubs, trees, grasses, and pathways—built with heavily textured brushwork, rich finishes, and a palette of deep violets set against contrasting ochres to carve shadow and form.
