Artist statement: This painting is based on one of the saddiest childhood memories… I found a photograph my mum took right after I discovered that Santa wasn’t real, and that there was no Rudolph or flying sleigh. I remember so clearly how my heart shattered, and how the magic seemed to disappear. I remember crying and running to the rooftop, staring into the night sky, trying to find the sleigh. The stars were bright, and the night was so cold. It felt like it was my last Christmas. In this work, I place my younger self inside a protective bubble, attempting to preserve those memories and shield a wounded child’s heart.
