Laying horizontally this queen palm seed husk has produced a unique twisted shape. The husk has been bound with hemp and red cordage at one end; the handle of a paddle (hoe) to steer your New Beginning. Parts of the husk were naturally split; One split has been bound with nine individual three strand lashings representing the Nine Stars of Matariki, and a single continuous binding along the upper edge represents the journey of our ancestors. Tucked inside the first hemp lashing is the nest of a Tauhou (Silvereye/Waxeye) which means ‘New Arrival’. The beginning of life under the watchful eyes of our ancestors.
