Poutama is a traditional stepped pattern in Māori art, commonly used in weaving (Raranga) and lattice work (tukutuku). Often translated as “stairway to heaven,” it symbolizes genealogies (whakapapa), levels of learning, intellectual achievement, and the continuous journey of personal growth and improvement.
Key Symbolism & Metaphor
The Journey of Learning: The steps symbolize the progression of education and intellectual attainment.
Hard Work and Rest: Each step has two parts that represent the phases of learning. The vertical, upward step represents the steep learning curve and exertion of acquiring new skills, while the flat, horizontal step represents the time spent consolidating and applying that knowledge before continuing upward.
Mythological Origins: The pattern relates to the story of the demigod Tāwhaki or the deity Tāne, who climbed to the highest heavens to bring back sacred baskets of knowledge (kete wānanga) for humanity.
Leadership and Community: As a person advances through the steps and gains experience, they are encouraged to reach back and help others achieve the same summit (taumata).
