Auckland-based artist Vanessa Narbey holds an MFA (Hons) from Elam School of Fine Arts. A finalist in major awards, she has exhibited internationally, with works in private and public collections worldwide.
Narbey’s practice centers on layering—building textured surfaces through stencils, colour, and masked pigment to explore perception, memory, and the subconscious. Her imagery often evokes fragments of dreams and shifting memories, inviting viewers to oscillate between recognition and ambiguity. Influenced by pareidolia, she investigates the human tendency to find meaning and faces in abstraction.
Referencing maps, landforms, and topographies, Narbey draws parallels between physical and psychological landscapes, using them as metaphors for connection, time, and change. Her fascination with sci-fi and planetary imagery expands these ideas, questioning how technology and nature shape identity and perception.
Through her layered, contemplative paintings, Narbey creates an introspective space—an abstract landscape of the mind reflecting on memory, fragility, and transformation.
