This patu, titled Te Ao Mārama, represents the journey from darkness into light and knowledge. Hand-carved from native New Zealand tōtara, its smooth, sweeping form honours traditional Māori design while showcasing the natural warmth of the timber. Finished with natural oils and a simple cotton cord, the piece balances strength with elegance. As an emerging artist, this work marks a foundational step in my carving journey, connecting ancestral techniques with my growing artistic voice.
