As the tuna make their way to te Moana Nui- a-Kiwa on their journey into the unknown, our recently departed make their way forth to matariki, their final haerenga (journey). Tuna / ngā tāngata mate, new life comes after death and growth, with new seasons approaching. A tohu (sign) in matariki, puanga, tautoru and takurua, from all corners of Aotearoa.
The young tuna face immense wero (challenges) not only upon their return haerenga but also on their henua (land) an increasingly hostile terrain of habitats lost and damaged. Healthy tuna are a premier indicator species for the life supporting capacity of the waterways, just as indigenous peoples wellbeing is an indicator for the larger population.
Ka hāhā te tuna ki te roto, ka hāhā te reo ki te kainga, ka hāhā te tangata ki te henua.
If the lake is full of eels, the language will resound in your home, and the land will be inhabited by the people.
