This piece is carved from recycled Rimu primarily – forming the main body, with Kauri and Puriri attachments for the foot rest which also has Paua shell inlays. Harakeke is used for binding. The foot rest is interchangeable for left or right side use. This piece was created to represent the turning of soil and planting signalled in the phases of Matariki. This has whakapapa significance for me as it was the act of farming our whenua that allowed my whanau to stay on our land and reduce confiscation.
