Maker of The Month: Katie Robinson

Katie Robinson divides her time between Alexandra, Central Otago, and Devonport, Auckland, though it’s the Central Otago landscape that grounds her practice.

Trained originally in science, she brings that background to her approach to painting it — less concerned with recording a view exactly as it appears, more drawn to what sits underneath it: the energy of a place, the way light shifts through a day, weather moves across a range, and time settles into rock and land.

Her work leans toward the abstract, using colour and form to get closer to that felt sense of landscape rather than a literal likeness of it.
