An Introduction to Painting and Colour with Katie Thornton
6 Week Class | 9 May – 13 June | Saturdays 10am-1pm

These classes are about exploring the joy and potential of paint with a specific focus on the importance of colour. The tutor will set new challenges each week including working from still lives through to creating abstract mark making. We will be experimenting with the unique properties of paint and exploring what we can do with it.
This class is suitable for complete beginners or for students that wish to get further technical knowledge to help them with a current idea or project. Students are encouraged to bring the painting medium that they feel comfortable with (acrylic, oil or watercolour) and there will also be the opportunity to experiment with painting mediums that they haven’t used before.
Cost is $220 for 6 weekly classes.
Students are asked to bring the painting medium you would like to use (watercolour, acrylic or oil), and the following items:
- Appropriate painting mediums: gel, gloss or matt mediums for acrylics, odourless turpentine, linseed oil or Liquin for oil paints
- Palette or old plates for mixing
- Rags or kitchen towels for cleanup
- Old shirt or apron
- Brushes: flat small, medium, large sizes up to 4cm wide in either hog bristle or soft synthetic filament or watercolour brushes
- Sketchbook (optional)
About Katie Thornton
Katie Thornton is a New Zealand artist who works in painting, sculpture, drawing and installation. After completing her undergraduate in art at the University of Auckland she went onto her Masters of Fine Art at RMIT University Melbourne. She spent 11 years in London where she exhibited in the UK and Europe. During her time in London she trained in figurative life drawing and painting at the Royal Drawing School. Now based back in Devonport she is teaching classes in both painting and life drawing at DEPOT (life drawing classes will commence in Term 2).

Please note that places are strictly limited to 12 and unless specified are for ages 16+ only.
