About the Exhibition

Dim the Lights so I Can See in the Dark is a solo exhibition by Avi Clark.

“This thing called painting is my way of reaching toward the unknown and the unique nature of being alive. I bring together colours that hold both harmony and contradiction, creating energy. There is a kind of truth in this visual language that words cannot quite touch.”

“Dimming the lights” is Clark’s way of describing what happens when the noise of the outside world is shut out. In this quieter space, the work reflects a shift in perception and attention.

There is nothing new to say, only a confirmation that there is more to our experience than the material world, and much of it remains a mystery.

About Avi Clark

Avi Clark is a contemporary painter based in Aotearoa New Zealand, working between the Waitematā Harbour and the Pacific Ocean. Painting has always been central to Clark’s life and practice, shaping an ongoing exploration of response, environment, and purpose.

Working intuitively, Clark is guided by the tactile experience of applying paint and observing how it interacts with the surface, whether canvas or wooden board. The process is immersive and responsive, with each layer building on the last rather than working toward a fixed outcome.

Clark draws inspiration from the natural environment, including the movement and reflection of water, the settling of mud in waterways, and the patterns and rhythms found in the landscape. These influences are translated into abstract compositions that move between abstract and recognition.

Clark describes the practice as a form of curation, selecting and reflecting moments from a constantly shifting environment. Living alongside the mangroves and tidal edges, Clark observes the changing surfaces of water, where a glossy layer sits above rich life beneath. This balance between surface and depth continues to inform the work.
