Bevan Smith: Animal Portraits
6 – 24 February
Opening in the Verge Gallery
Saturday 6 February, 2 – 3.30pm
An exhibition of animal portraiture by Bevan Smith.
“To categorise, even to describe in many words, is to suffocate curiosity. My drawings are an attempt to feel the evolved, created, miraculous beauty of the animal.”
Bevan Smith will be exhibiting eleven framed pencil drawings in sizes ranging from A4 to A2. He believes the use of hard and soft graphite demands accuracy in detail and contrast which can sometimes be diminished by colours. “The medium provides for me an intimacy with the subject. I hope some of the feelings can be shared.”
Smith’s love of animals was nurtured in his childhood and broadened through travel in such places as Africa and Borneo. In 2015 he was invited to display his work in an art exhibition by Westlake Old Boys. He is currently completing a science degree in animal studies.
