First Thursdays: Charcoal Workshop with Dr. Richard Coldicutt
First Thursdays: Charcoal Workshop with Dr. Richard Coldicutt
August 1, 2024 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Low-tech / No-tech: Unplug your creativity, no batteries, no hardware, no software. Just a burnt stick and an open mind.
In a 21st Century context, our growing desire and dependency on screen imagery serves as a direct challenge to the relevance of mark-making using basic tools and found objects. This back-to-basics workshop offers an opportunity to experience the delights and endless possibilities in creating with a humble burnt stick; charcoal.
The introduction will demonstrate the merits of charcoal. Subsequent exercises will give participants an opportunity to journey into the use of this medium and techniques to express tone, line, shape, texture, pattern, volume, composition and narrative. Drawing exercises will direct participants to look and perceive through observation and imagination.
Tickets are $10 and cover all materials and refreshments courtesy of our hospitality partner Toi Toi Wines. Koha for the artist will be accepted upon entry.
Spaces are limited to be sure to book your spot using the link below!

About Dr. Richard Coldicutt
As long as I can remember I’ve been using my hands to create.
Drawing, painting and sculpting have become essential tools to capture my world and express ideas. My main inspiration has always been from nature and its integral relationship with culture.
That inspiration took me to art school where I studied Graphic Design and Illustration before pursuing a degree in Fine Arts and received a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Fine Arts. After further study I gained a Master of Creative Arts and a Doctorate (PhD).
My life as a professional artist has been greatly enriched by the pleasures of sharing my skills through lecturing at universities and running workshops for schools and private institutions.
