About the Exhibition
Material World is a meditation on perception, transformation, and place. In this body of work, Chris Melville continues his photographic exploration of everyday fabrics – linen, cotton, denim, and sheer textiles – using slow shutter speeds and natural light to create images that evoke vast, elemental landscapes.
What appears at first glance as rolling mountains, tidal currents, or mist drifting across water is, in fact, an intimate study of material in motion. The familiar is dissolved into something expansive and atmospheric, inviting viewers to question where reality ends and imagination begins.
Presented at DEPOT 3 Vic, in close proximity to the shifting waters of the Waitematā Harbour and the surrounding maunga, this exhibition subtly echoes its environment. The works resonate with the rhythms of sea and land, suggesting a quiet dialogue between constructed image and lived landscape. Layers ripple like tide and terrain, reflecting both the physical geography of Devonport and the emotional landscapes we carry within us.
Material World offers a moment of stillness – an invitation to look again, and to find the extraordinary within the ordinary.
About the Artist
Chris Melville is an award-winning New Zealand abstract photographer whose work transforms everyday materials into evocative, landscape-like imagery. Using fabric, natural light, and slow shutter techniques, he creates ethereal compositions that blur the boundary between abstraction and reality.
His practice is rooted in the idea that beauty and meaning can be uncovered in the most familiar objects. By recontextualising textiles into sweeping visual environments, Melville invites viewers into a contemplative space where perception is fluid and open to interpretation.
Alongside his visual art practice, Chris is also a jazz vocalist, bringing a similar sense of rhythm, nuance, and improvisation to both disciplines. His work has resonated with collectors and audiences drawn to its calming, meditative qualities and its ability to evoke place without defining it.
