Chromatic Fields brings together the vivid paintings of local residents Darnelle Louie and Jane Walsh. Having met in art class at Mairangi Bay Art Centre, Jane and Darnelle noticed a sympathetic use of block colour and tonal contrast existing in both their practices. This specific use of colour is the most salient unifying thread between the two series of paintings included in this exhibition, their underlying rationale being derived from different wellsprings of memory and nostalgia.

Jane Walsh’s series, ‘Made in the shade’, is inspired by vintage motel postcards featuring images from the 1950s. For the first time ever in the ‘50s, paint colours were available in any possible hue and ‘modern’ colour schemes aimed to create a marked contrast between colours, whether pastel or clean and bright tones. Walsh has chosen a palette that reflects this. ‘Made in the shade’ is an expression from the ‘50s, implying an ideal situation; just kicking back in a lawn chair by the pool, without a care in the world…

Darnelle Louie’s ‘Beneath the Earth’ explores the depth and myths of Tāmaki Makaurau’s volcanic cones. Having lived in Devonport all her life, Louie has consequently always been acutely aware of how volatile the volcanic fields are that we conduct our daily lives upon. This developed into a dreamlike curiosity of what is happening beneath the surface, invisible to the average Auckland domesticity. As a child, Louie heard rumours of volcanic tunnels formed by lava, running from Maungauika (North Head) and Takarunga (Mount Victoria) out to Rangitoto Island. Her imagination was fueled even more by the 1970s  television series ‘Under the Mountain’.

About the Artists:

Jane Walsh is originally from Wellington but has called Auckland’s North Shore home for the last 30 years. You’ll find her on the beach every morning walking her badly-behaved golden retriever! Walsh is a former commercial lawyer who these days prefers exploring her creative side. She paints predominantly with acrylics and enjoys combining abstract painting with more figurative work.

Darnelle Louie is a self-taught artist living in Devonport. Her early interest in photography led to an apprenticeship in photolithography, and subsequent work in this profession. Photolithography eventually became obsolete with the introduction of Apple technology; Louie adapted and worked in the print industry. She has also briefly published a children’s magazine, and worked as a colour consultant for Resene in Devonport. Now employed in the Civil Construction Industry, Louie hopes to turn her creative outlet into a part-time occupation.
