Clive Kelly: Out of the Shallows

This recent series extends Clive Kelly’s fascination with what is between surface and depth, between stillness and movement.  These tensions echo the stillness and depth in the human condition. There exists a tension between a tight fluid surface and an engaging deep space. Kelly enjoys and explores the pull between the two. There exists a sense of deliverance and tranquility at once feared and desired. These paintings continue a preoccupation with the balance between abstraction and the recognisable image.
