About the Exhibition
These six works are selected from an extensive body of photographs, taken by the artist in 2024 and 2025.
In Ward’s photography, the lens acts as the voyeur’s eye, embedding them in the scene. He typically captures from afar, demanding pause and study of the environment. In contrast, there are intimate yet fleeting glances of domestic objects and man-made structures.
Pulse of Place / Tūrangawaewae considers our standing within the natural landscape, encouraging mōhiohio (recognition) of what has existed, how we act within the whenua maru now, and the ways in which our perception of place adapts through different literal and figurative lenses.
Ward gives thanks to Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei as mana whenua of this kūititanga and acknowledges that Māori sovereignty was never ceded. Toitū te Tiriti.
All prints are available to be framed by the artist upon request.
About the Artist
Connor Ward is a Pākehā photographer and artist, based in Maungakiekie, Tāmaki-Makaurau. With a background in architecture, his work often explores the tension between our organic and built environments.
His Master’s thesis explored the temporal and voyeuristic nature of queer nightclub culture – ideas he also explores in his photographic work. His practice alternates between slow, deliberate framing of te whenua, and harsh un-staged snapshots of his other subjects.
Ward’s photographic and fine art work is exclusively captured on various formats of film stock. In this exhibition, he uses a Mamiya C220 TLR, Canon AE-1, and Minolta Pocket AutoPak 430X.
