Cynthia and Chris McKenzie: Gallipoli Remembered

April 9, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - April 27, 2016 @ 3:00 pm

Cynthia and Chris McKenzie were among the two thousand New Zealanders chosen in the ballot to attend the 100-year commemoration services on 25 April 2015 at Gallipoli, alongside eight thousand Australians. They found the experience very intense and emotional and it has had a lasting impact. Cynthia and Chris wanted to share their response to this historic occasion.

As Cynthia’s medium is pastel she has created works featuring the well-known symbol of ANZAC, the red poppy. The poppy is of course a symbol of remembrance for WW1 and echoes the colour of the blood of the soldiers who died. As a photographer Chris was inspired to record the landscape, statues and trenches. Gallipoli Remembered is a very personal response to a deeply felt experience.

Bios:

Cynthia McKenzie has been drawing and painting for about 10 years, discovering pastels after attending classes at the Mairangi Art Centre. She is very enthusiastic about pastels – their freshness, colour range and compatibility with her style. She is a member of Depot Artspace, Estuary Arts and the Mairangi Art Centre. She has exhibited with these galleries, at the Royal Easter Show, ‘Affair of the Heart’ Northcote College, Kumeu Art in the Garden, the Bruce Mason Centre, Fine Arts Academy (Wellington) and the Great Art Sale. She is a member of the NZ Pastel Art Society and is now their secretary. She works as a librarian so pastel painting, a passion and a pleasure fills her leisure hours.

Chris McKenzie runs his lighting business, Professional Lighting Services, and has worked as a lighting technician in the film, stage and television industry for many years. He is skilled in the use of light to enhance a scene. Travel and photography are his passions, and he uses his understanding of light and shade in his photography of landscape and objects. He has had the benefit of working with some of the world’s leading cinematographers and has learned photographic techniques such as composition from these masters. In his own practice he enjoys seeing the world with a cinematographer’s eye and captures the beautiful and the unusual in subjects.
