Opening in the Small Dog Gallery
Saturday 19 October 3 – 4.30pm
Dean Buchanan (artist) and Helga Strewe (jeweller) present an exhibition of their recent work.
Dean Buchanan – Painting
“Painting is my life. It is just what I am cut out to do. I paint every day, there is just so much to paint. I never run out of ideas or inspiration. I only need to look at the sky, watch the sunset, walk through the bush or climb a mountain. You’ve got to really know the landscape to paint it and I think I know New Zealand pretty well. I’ve walked, cycled and climbed a fair bit of it now.
This exhibition is about our place. New Zealand.”
Helga Buchanan – Jewellery
“I find it relaxing and a pleasure to sit at my bench, in my work room, making jewellery. The process of cutting, sawing, soldering, sanding and polishing is totally entertaining. I sometimes sketch out what I am going to make beforehand or I will fill pages with doodles which I can then translate into a piece of jewellery but, usually I just go through the process in my head and work out what, or how I am going to make a particular piece. I love working in miniature, creating flowers, leaves, insects, spider webs and curlicues, all out of silver. I also work with precious stones, beads and pearls in all their varied shapes, sizes and colours.”
