Janet Hafoka: Stories We Tell Ourselves

November 23, 2013 @ 2:00 pm - December 5, 2013 @ 3:00 pm

Opening in the Small Dog Gallery
Saturday 23 November 2 – 3.30pm

“We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are.”

– Anais Nin

Having graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the University of Auckland in 2011, Janet Hafoka has been exploring memory and its constructs in her work.  In particular, its fallibility interests her. Using her own recollections and objects from childhood as a resource, she uses her camera as a tool to draw out ideas relating to both false memory and forgetfulness.
She is intrigued by how deeply our past experiences can influence both the present and our future, particularly the way we perceive and interpret things and also how we re-present these things to others.

“We will always have our own way of seeing that is unique to us, our own reality that we carry with us.  It does not hurt for us to stand back and question our understanding of things once in a while.”
