About the Exhibition

The Weight of Things brings together Katie Robinson’s distinctive painting style with her unique form of storytelling. Each work is painted on a recycled substrate – materials already rich with their own story. The paintings explore the Central Otago landscape, which underpins Katie’s deep connection to place, alongside objects and mementos chosen by others for their personal significance. This is a show about the weight of the things, places, and people we hold dear.

About the Artist

Katie Robinson is an artist based between in Alexandra in Central Otago, and Devonport, Auckland. She paints imagined landscapes and interiors which draw strongly from memory, place, and the small details of everyday life. Known for her offbeat use of colour and unexpected contrasts, her work balances playfulness with moments of quiet reflection. Animals, textures, and recurring motifs sometimes appear, giving her paintings a layered and personal quality. 

With a background in science—she holds a PhD in Chemistry and has worked as a scientist and patent attorney—Katie brings curiosity and a sense of experimentation to her practice.
