Madeleine Slavick: Hong Kong Song
May 30, 2015 @ 10:00 am - June 24, 2015 @ 3:00 pm
In the photographic series Hong Kong Song, Madeleine Slavick presents the poetry, poverty, and generosity of Hong Kong.
The body of work draws attention to Slavick’s multi-faceted practice as writer, photographer, artist and activist. It draws attention to the many characteristics of Hong Kong – the natural beauty and the pollution, the rural and urban, insects and high rises, grit and wealth.
Slavick has exhibited internationally, in Africa, Asia, Europe, New Zealand, and North America. An author of several books of photography, poetry, and non-fiction, she lived in the United States for 25 years, in Hong Kong for another 25 years, and now lives outside of Wellington.
The five images on display are from a comprehensive solo exhibition which began at the Aratoi Museum, with support from Creative New Zealand and Masterton District. The exhibition is based on Slavick’s book Fifty Stories Fifty Images which is available from Depot Artspace.
