Matariki Celebration – Deborah Duncan: Korowai Exhibition

June 15, 2013 @ 3:00 pm - June 28, 2013 @ 5:00 pm

Opening in the Outerspace Gallery
Saturday 15th 3 – 4.30pm

Descended from Ngati Paoa, Deborah Duncan presents a comprehensive exhibition of traditional and contemporary Maori flax weaving. Duncan’s magnificent Korowai (cloak) woven with 25,000 feathers creates a story and celebrates the life of ‘Te Hana’. This will be shown alongside a unique and original Kōauau kete (flute bag) and a Waka Huia (treasure chest) both intertwined with feathers.

Duncan combines traditional technique with fashion in her Taniko (patterns) that have been woven with modern beads called ‘Kowhaiwhai Bling’. She often moves between customary and fine art materials in her practice. This is represented in her sculptural barbed wire kete symbolising the weaver’s struggles through life.
