Niki Hill: Fresh, Fur & Flesh

May 6, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - May 24, 2017 @ 3:00 pm

Niki Hill’s exhibition, Fresh, Fur & Flesh is a contemporary still life collection of artworks with a unique take on fashion and contemporary conversation. Serving as a retrospective for her career over the past decade, this bizarre and tantalising collection showcases two bodies of works, which sit together within their own unique genre and ephemerality.

Niki Hill’s Fresh, Fur & Flesh features a stunning collection of 27 works, comprising of mainly photographs and a select few paintings from her previous exhibitions Bizarre High Tea and Quasi Fantasy Collection.  The exhibition addresses a variety of subjects and each series features unique printing processes, which Hill has undertaken since 2008.

The series Quasi Fantasy takes a contemporary view of Western culture, dismantling high-fashion accessories as a traditional symbol of class and success; while Bizarre High Tea reinvents teapots, teacups and tiered plates utilising raw animal products, intending to evoke conversations about contemporary environmental issues and whimsy.

Both series dissect the traditional still life and act as unconventional conversation pieces, highlighting a surreal dichotomy between expectation and reality. Each image provides the perfectly lit aesthetic of a product advertising shot, which visually lures the viewer’s interest, then just as you feel delighted the trap is set; the awkward question snaps as the surrealist moment captures the mind.

The Depot is pleased to be exhibiting Niki Hill’s work for the first time and is intrigued by both the technique and display of her photographic process, and the peculiar and gripping nature of her works. Fresh, Fur & Flesh features limited editions photographs, as well as archival prints C Type photography mounted on aluminium and framed under UV true view glass. It also includes four inimitable light boxes, which consist of an archival photographic transparency under clear acrylic, mounted on opal acrylic and are backlit by custom-made LED lighting.
