About the Exhibition

RE: OBJECT marks the halfway point in the inaugural two-year OBJECT MAKER Aotearoa Fellowship designed to nurture and empower 10 contemporary object makers working across craft-based and found materials.

The Fellowship provides masterclasses, mentoring, group coaching and exhibition development to support artists forming their professional sustainable practices.

Focusing on material play alongside conceptual insights – artists explore the rich intersection between craft, design and visual arts and bring the object into the spotlight. RE: OBJECT showcases a diverse group of artists working with new ideas, pushing material boundaries and testing new ways of making.

RE: OBJECT is proudly supported by Creative New Zealand and is part of the OBJECT MAKER Aotearoa Fellowship programme managed by Seedpod Studio Limited.

About the Artists

Phillipa Gee

I am a jewellery artist working in an explorative format; using a material or technique to experiment with. Completing a BA in Fine Art majoring in Gold and Silversmithing at RMIT at the beginning of my career, a few years ago I completed a Graduate Diploma in Applied Art. I supply several galleries around New Zealand with jewellery and recently had a piece acquired by the Dowse for its collection.

Taarn Scott

Taarn Scott is an artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Their practice is multidisciplinary and often collaborative, creating tactile objects informed by jewellery. These forms speak to ideas around habitat, environmental concerns, and geographical histories. They are currently researching insects and working with ceramic sculpture. They recently exhibited in Folded Memory at Te Pātaka Toi Adam Art Gallery in collaboration with Hana Pera Aoake in 2023 & Burrow (Collapse) at Spectrum Project Space in Perth, 2024.

Eva Kerer

Eva Kerer is a contemporary jeweller based in Whakatū – Nelson. Her practice is informed by materiality and combines traditional silversmithing with experimental techniques, often incorporating found objects. Eva explores jewellery as a communication tool, questioning conventional perceptions of value and craftsmanship and examining the meanings attached to the materials.

Bebay Millán

I am Bebay Millán, and with a foundation in Industrial Design I incorporate various materials and art forms into my practice. I have exhibited in both Mexico and Aotearoa, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques. Based in Wellington, I reflect my Mexican heritage through bold colours and shapes inspired by my rich cultural background.

Birgit Moffatt

There are many ways to connect – in my work the physicality of the making brings me into the dialogue with the world. Living in a rural setting on the Kāpiti Coast, I have built my art practice around creating work that is rooted in the natural world. In my studio I transform foraged elements, such as harakeke, bark, leaves or seed pods into sculptural objects or installations using traditional and contemporary weaving techniques. Through my work I aim to convey ideas of identity, place, belonging and self-discovery: peeling back the layers to reveal my true nature and find my place in Aotearoa.

Juliana Durán

Juliana Durán’s work is rooted in an interdisciplinary approach that brings together illustration, object-making, and installation, each serving as a medium to explore broader narratives and contexts. Her practice is marked by a deep engagement with materiality, form, and space, offering reflections on the relationships between art, environment, and personal experience.

Samuel Montgomery

Sam is a fine arts graduate from Unitec with a focus on installation and sculpture. He furthered his studies by pursuing postgraduate studies at Elam, honing his skills in creating immersive environments and sculptural works. Sam’s artistic practice extends beyond traditional boundaries, as he collaborates with artist friends to explore the space of making furniture. His creative endeavours also include crafting pedestals for Tyrone te Waa, showcasing his versatility in both practical and conceptual aspects of art. Through their diverse experiences and collaborative spirit, Sam continues to push the boundaries of contemporary art, forging new pathways in installation, sculpture, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Mel Ford

Horowhenua based artist Mel Ford enjoys the science involved in crafting an artwork. Engaging with both materiality and a repeated action or process, she creates work which references a passage of time or state of flux.

Alex Wilkinson

Alex Wilkinson is a ceramic artist based in the Waikato. Her work explores themes of imperfection, self-expression, and the tension between control and chance in creation. She is also the founder of Mystery Creek Ceramics, a renowned brand with a focus on creating beautiful tableware that connect art and everyday life.

Sarah Ziessen

Sarah Ziessen, a Rotorua-based ceramic artist, explores the ontology and existential nature of being through her ceramic practice. With a Fine Arts degree from Whitecliffe College, her work explores global ceramic traditions and the archetypal link between vessels and the human body.
