Jade Kake’s forthcoming book, Rebuilding the Kāinga (BWB Texts), charts the resurgence of contemporary papakāinga on whenua Māori over the last three decades. In this talk, she will describe the current social and political context, reflect on the relevance of Indigenous economies in the post- Treaty of Waitangi settlement era, and put forward the central idea of rebuilding our kāinga – our villages – as the primary unit for economic and political activity. Kake will discuss some of our unique tenure and finance constraints, and draw on innovative local and international models to sketch out a vision where Māori are supported to build affordable homes and businesses on whānau, hapū or Treaty settlement lands – and describes the policy direction needed to make this a reality.
