Robyn Gibson: Hurry Slowly and Other Impractical Advice // Christine Hansen: Paintings
December 14, 2013 @ 2:00 pm - December 19, 2013 @ 3:00 pm
Opening in the Main Gallery
Saturday 14 December 2 – 3.30pm
Painter and sculptor Robyn Gibson is presently the artist in residence at the Kerr Street experimental gallery and project space in Devonport Auckland.
Gibson’s works are speckled with hints of surrealism and a subtle disarming sense of humour. Her complex, often quirky palette comprises materials and subject matter garnered from her past and present and leaves the viewer colliding head on with romantic notions of painting, digital prints and sculpture.
This is Christine Hansen’s first exhibition since graduating from Elam School of Fine Arts in 1979. Since then she has worked as an illustrator and graphic designer.
The works in this show span a period of approximately 10 years of intermittent painting. These paintings are largely biographical: they arise from memories and imaginings of family histories, particularly those of her grandparents who lived in rural northland.
The objects Hansen chooses to paint are ones that carry the particular psychological resonance she wished to communicate and are reminiscent of that time.
