ROUND-A-BOUT: ArtsLab Exhibition

October 8, 2020 @ 5:30 pm - November 5, 2020 @ 5:30 pm

ROUND-A-BOUT is the concept of a circle, like a Ferris wheel, where points on the periphery are connected to each other through the space in the middle. Here, there are no obvious places of starts and finishes. Instead bright and contrasting colours make up movement. Playful objects and patterns represent journeys that return back on themselves to depart to somewhere else.

With the lockdown causing introspective conditions the artists have produced work about salvation, contentment and gratefulness. There is a focus on individual style and expression for the benefit of the audience but which is still personal to the artist. The walls and the clothes are covered with many different images and details. The result is a space which is fun and inviting.

3 unique emerging young visual artists from ArtsLab put together a group exhibition in Depot Artspace called ROUND-A-BOUT from 8th Oct – 5th Nov.

The opening night held on Thursday 8th Oct 5:30 – 8pm will include special performances from other ArtsLab creatives. We anticipate this night to be filled with vibrant vibes, colours and networking fun!

My body of artwork for Round-A-Bout is colourful, surreal and a little bit uneasy. I used glitter to enhance the dreamlike landscapes the animal figures are in. The work is about finding and creating places to inhabit. Not sublime utopias but vivid niches.

Telling a story of my journey expressing my experiences, inspiration and revelations. Through worship, dancing and spending time with Jesus my heart is taken on the journey of healing. Using bold colours, with big brush strokes and a playful approach to mark making with colour. It makes me feel ALIVE!

My artistic practice has not been a linear journey, much like the lines you see in front of you. It has had curves and bends as I have jumped through a variety of different mediums from installation to textiles to audio visual and the list goes on.

This exhibition presents my abstracted line drawings focusing on colour relationships as both the line and colour converse with one another. It brings a sense of comfortability and balance in its simplicity ‘devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter… A soothing, calming influence on the mind, something like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue’ (Henri Matisse).
