Sasha Alba: Objects I Hold

Sasha Alba: Objects I Hold

August 6, 2022 @ 8:00 am August 30, 2022 @ 5:00 pm

Streetfront Gallery, Depot Artspace

Given the increased importance of our home environments in recent times, Sasha Alba has carried out studies of domestic objects familiar to many living in Aotearoa. The items within these still life paintings tend to have feminine forms, mirroring the changes the artist is experiencing with pregnancy. Her artistic objective is to preserve and value collective memories of our domestic spheres, building a painterly record of the private, interior world many women inhabit in parallel to their public working lives.

In seeking a sense of calm and order, Sasha works with a restricted range of pigments informed by each arrangement of objects – this allows her to create specific colour fields inside each painting. Each family of objects in these paintings are brought together through relationships of shape, colour and space.

Through the observation of simple forms, the artist hopes to develop harmonious, grounded, humble paintings that bring comfort in turbulent times. Whilst most are fragile objects made from clay or glass, many predate the artist and will likely exist after her, highlighting the transience of life.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Since childhood, Sasha has identified as a painter. After graduating from the National Art School, Sydney she studied at Studio Escalier, France, and in the Jerusalem school in Civita, Italy. In 2016 Sasha caught viral encephalitis, resulting in temporary loss of her yellow and 3D vision, her visual-musical synesthesia, along with brain fog. This shattered her artist dreams, but throughout the long road to recovery she kept painting figures, landscapes, plein air and still life.

Sasha aims to be a painterly painter, communicating how light falls on form. She loves the intellectual and creative challenges of how to translate her experience of reality through paint. For her, painting is about colour relationships and the space between things. A Devonport local, the artist made this body of work in her home studio. For Sasha, it is just a joy to be able to paint fluently again.
