Spinning Demo by Priscilla Lowry

September 13, 2017 @ 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm

The Depot Artspace is thrilled to once again be exhibiting the stunning textiles works of Priscilla Lowry as a part of The Art Room Extended from the 9 – 27 September.

April 2018 will mark the 50th year of Priscilla’s spinning endeavours and will see her faithful Ashford Traveller spinning wheel passed along to a friend as she moves on to new adventures. Priscilla has worked in textiles her whole life, both creating her own and educating those on working with silk; she has also written several books on the history and world of silk.

Priscilla began spinning in April 1967 when she lived outside Matamata. For weeks she scraped the odd £0.50 pence together to eventually save the £25 needed to purchase a spinning wheel from the local hardware store Booth and Chapman. Having never spun before, she was determined to learn and placed an ad in the local paper seeking a teacher. Ten days later a lady named Nancy Pond answered her ad and offered to teach her how to use her wheel. Once Priscilla figured out how to work the pedal, she quickly found she was a natural and spend the next two weeks ‘spinning like mad’!

Priscilla describes spinning as ‘a magical thing to do’ which ‘provides something beautiful to show from a hobby’. Priscilla’s enthusiasm and passion for spinning is infectious and we are excited she will here again demonstrating for Depot Gallery visitors. We hope you can come along to see her in action one last time!

PLEASE NOTE: there are 3 sessions of the spinning demo that you can attend.
