About the Exhibition
120 is a soft sideways scroll through the subconscious world of artist Steve Bolton. As a link between the real and unreal worlds, 120 has a foot in both camps – both the actual and the imagined.
With the paintings present on the walls of the gallery in front of you tangible, actual and real, but drawn down from an internal subconscious dreamscape – from memory, imagination and illusion – as snapshots from the subconscious. Images from an internal world, they are captured seconds and flashes of light from a third place. Neither wholly true, nor entirely imagined – and often not even possible – but made physical in the panels here. Space, time, history, humanity and the spiritual world are all given space. In these 120 painted panels energy is given form.
About the Artist
Steve Bolton is an Auckland based painter, printmaker and cartoonist. As a painter he works primarily in oils, ink and acrylics.
Working in both abstract and figurative styles, and across a wide variety of subjects, his work includes elements of humour; with people, places, history, science and the breadth of human experience all central and recurring themes.
Beyond his solo exhibition 120, Steve is a familiar face across DEPOT’s creative programme. During August he is featured as our Maker of the Month in the DEPOT Shop | Toi Toa, presents new work as part of Studio D3: Alchemy, and later this year will join fellow artists in a major DEPOT group exhibition. As a resident Studio D3 artist, Steve’s practice is woven into the creative life of DEPOT, with his distinctive work continuing to inspire audiences across multiple exhibitions and projects.
