Maker of the Month: Colin McKay

Our DEPOT Shop | Toi Toa Maker of the Month for September 2025 is Colin McKay.

Every month we’ll be featuring one of our artists and their works available in our gallery shop, so be sure to stop by and view the collection!

Colin’s artwork is driven by a deep fascination with the beauty and variety of fish – in all their colours, shapes and sizes. His inspiration comes from closely observing the natural world and translating what he sees into intricate, expressive watercolours.

Entirely self-taught, Colin spends hours perfecting each piece, from the first pencil sketch to the final brushstroke. He experiments with a mix of brushes, pencils, water-based pens and colour tubes to capture the unique features of each species – carefully layering tones to get the colours just right.

For Colin, it’s all in the details. Eyes, fins, tails, gills and scales are more than just features – they’re the parts that bring the whole fish to life.

Be sure to stop by and view this stunning collection of high-quality prints and a framed original!
