Dawn J Flower: al[l] ter [ra] native

August 3, 2013 @ 10:00 am - August 15, 2013 @ 5:00 pm

6 August 1945 commemorates Hiroshima Day, the day when an atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, followed a few days later by another dropped on the city of Nagasaki. The bombings effectively ended World War II by bringing about the surrender of Japan, but at a terrible price – the two cities were destroyed and casualties, mostly civilians, were estimated at around 200,000, with many more people dying later from injuries and illness. Hiroshima Day is now a focus for anti-war and anti-nuclear discussions and demonstrations.

The work of artist Dawn J Flower is a timely reminder of the destructive nature of nuclear energy but is also hopeful in its presentation of viable and positive alternatives.

The concept of al[l] ter [ra] native is to draw attention and contemplate the beauty of renewable energy alternatives that are available in the production of electricity. Not just the fact that there is no residue to deal with as in fossil fuel and nuclear fission, but in the harmonious structures that can add elegance to the landscape. This video work is a visual of comparison and contemplates the human scale of how alternative energy can be accessible and make a positive impact to communities.
