Dylan-Blanc Huata – Hi There, Haere

22 Jan – 9 Feb 2022
Opening: 22 January 2022 2 – 4pm with dance & music performance at 3pm
Central Gallery

A poetic take on unacknowledged discussions. ‘Hi There, Haere’ presents the audience with the honest and harsh lifestyle of Māori & kiwis living comfortably and in poverty. From financial struggles to domestic abuse, Dylan Blanc’s take is defined through a disorganised, vibrant and abstract style. Clashed with a dull, dark and authentic subject matter. This vivid contrast helps to show inequality, the history of Māori culture, the rise in failing youth, struggles with addictions. With mixed media works of splattered acrylics, oil pastels and spray paint, harmonious street-like style presents itself throughout the exhibition.

This narrative is based on the artist’s own upbringing, interests and surroundings—his adolescence and search for independence has heavily influenced all of the works. Blanc’s aim is to represent the youth of our indigenous people—that they are more than capable—as well as giving society an insight to the reality of a large portion of Aotearoa, New Zealand. In other words, a look inside the lives of the modern day whānau can assist the uneducated in finding clearer understandings of problems that are still relevant today.

About the artist:

Dylan-BLANC (21), is a self-taught artist from the iwi Ngāti Kahungunu (Hawkes Bay). Blanc has early memories as a child of drawing over his grandparents’ furniture, and selling artworks. Since then, he has taken a more profound and serious discipline on creativity—prioritising Dance, Music, Painting and Poetry over the events and occasions of the average 21 year old. A passion to learn all arts and hopes of becoming a memorable motivator. For his culture, his people and aspiring youth. The discipline remains solid as he continues to broaden his potential.

Now living in Auckland, North shore, with aspiring goals, Blanc’s search for independence as an expressionist continues. While learning how to compare different art forms, his understanding of how to make strong impactful statements grows through movement, still portraits and sound.
