First Thursdays: Nokshi Kotha Workshop with Sahana Rahman

July 4 @ 5:00 pm 8:00 pm

Join Sahana Rahman for July’s First Thursdays in Devonport, Te Hau Kapua

Nokshi Katha is a style of Bengali embroidery, practised by hand and done by a group working on a single piece of cloth. This is a community workshop which teaches the importance of collective healing through a Bengali art tradition which offers a practice which centres around open conversation, community healing and joy. Nokshi Katha is a dying Bengali tradition because of modern industrial techniques, and its practice has become increasingly rare.

Sahana will introduce the workshop at 5pm with a presentation. From there participants will work together learning the Bengali embroidery stitches to contribute to a collective work using a large piece of fabric that is shared amongst the participants. Workshop participants are encouraged to bring an item with them that is significant to them or their culture which will be used as the base for embroidery.

This is a FREE workshop with koha accepted on entry. Refreshments will be provided courtesy of our hospitality partner Toi Toi Wines.

Spaces are limited to be sure to RSVP using the link below!

As a First Thursdays partner, The Vic Devonport is showing a Series of Artist Films curated by local conceptual artist and photographer Mickey Smith. Screening on 4 July, 8pm – BILL CUNNINGHAM: NEW YORK.
