Craig Humberstone, Myung Lee & Steve Burgess: Il Trittico – The Triptych

10 – 28 October

Opening in the Main Gallery as part of Artweek Auckland

Saturday 10 October 2 – 3.30pm

The Depot Artspace Main Gallery comes alive for the opening of Artweek Auckland with paintings, installations, projections and a musical interlude featuring rare operatic records from 1905 to 1945.

Il Trittico (The Triptych) is the collection of three one-act operas by Giacomo Puccini that three Auckland-based artists have adapted as their exhibition title and theme. As the operas inhabit three different aural worlds – tragedy, beauty and farce – so too the visual worlds of Craig Humberstone, Myung Lee and Steve Burgess, presenting contrasting views of life and reality.

Nature – life, death, renewal

Architecture – construction, form, space

Fantasy – history, pop culture, nostalgia

Craig Humberstone creates dramatic images of operatic intensity. Looking at the zone above high tide and within the mangroves, Humberstone draws on the complex natural compositions of plant and animal life. Objects are suspended, out of place, alive, dead or in decay.

Myung Lee is interested in the play of light and colour on architecture and the geometry of urban spaces. Lee presents powerful images that question our ideas of reality. She looks at delineation of form and structure, construction, texture and detail.

Steve Burgess works with themes of fantasy and reinterpretation through painted images from New Zealand and world history and from the realms of film and animation.
