Jacqueline Macleod: Memory for $ale

Memory for $ale is Jacqueline MacLeod’s exploration of female online identity, questioning how networked technologies influence women and the relationships women have with each other; ‘groups’, online ‘friends’, cyber-security, social online discourse and the forming of self.

Macleod is drawn to the aesthetic and economic relationship that exists between the virtual and physical life, describing her work as “constructed portraiture”. The finely detailed, not-quite-photo-realistic paintings and digital prints of people who have never actually existed are modelled first in a collage, then computer and later rendered in oil paint.

Macleod’s focus on the effects of digital media within female identity and the forming of multiple selves on online platforms alongside who you are in reality, challenges our reliance on and captivation with technology.

Much of Macleod’s work to-date has consisted of figures that interact with a combination of oil painting and digital work and more recently sculpture.

The Sculptural Digital Books relate to the juxtaposition of the Stone Tablet or Ceramic Tablet, one of the first forms of communication and story-telling within close-knit communities and the now digital forms of communication such as the tablet/iPad.

Memory for $ale opens at Depot Artspace on Friday 10 November, 6pm-8pm alongside Robyn Gibson’s show, Solace in Familiar Things and Beatrice Carlson’s show, Unwearable: 2010 – 2017 Retrospective.

About Jacqueline Macleod

Jacqueline graduated from Massey University with a B.Ed. (Double Major) Fine Arts and Education (1997) and Dip Tchg. Paul Dibble was her tutor in Bronze Sculpture and Painting. While teaching for a number of years, Jacqueline chose to start her MEd at the University of Canterbury in 2009. Jacqueline now works full time on her art practice and has exhibited and sold in solo and group Shows around New Zealand and select recent shows held in Mayfair, London and Jakarta, Indonesia.

She was the one of the first artists in her field to complement a team of Engineers in CAD Design and Electrical Draughting, working in the field of Electrical PC and 3D CAD Design.  Jacqueline draws from her Engineering background, synthesising technological and figurative collusions to create her Oil Paintings on Linen; Digital Prints and Gesso Transferred/Photo-shopped Collages on Board.

Jacqueline draws on a range of art styles and conceptual influences such as; Cindy Sherman, Yvonne Todd, and Michael Borresman, also referring to the Dutch Golden Age and 19thC Frida Kahlo. The meshing of art styles and contrast of imagery from both past and present is the visual and psychological glue that binds the work.

Jacqueline’s work is held in a number of public and private art collections, including Massey University and the Wallace Arts Trust (2016).
