Opening in the Outerspace Gallery
Saturday 22 March 2 – 3.30pm
In conjunction with Folk Fortnight the Depot Artspace presents an exhibition of works by folk photographer Ruth Ames. Ruth was an important member of the folk dancing scene, who performed and taught in the Auckland area for the last 35 years of her life. In the 1970s Ruth belonged to the Auckland English Traditional Dance Club (AETDC) and went on to become a founding member of the Ruritanian International Folk Dance Club. Under Ruth’s leadership her groups were known for their polished performances and stunning costumes. In 1994, she created the “Winter Warm-up” bringing together various dance groups.
The Winter Warm-up tradition continues to this day. Ruth also ran international dance classes at Howick, Grey Lynn, Rangitoto College, Richmond Road School and Cox’s Bay. Spurred by her love of photography she completed a Bachelor of Design and Visual Arts and combined both passions, photographing dancers in diverse fields. Her body of work has been presented in several exhibitions. This is a unique opportunity to view her legacy through works from a private New Zealand collection.
