Tom Turner: A Freudian Slip

February 27, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - March 16, 2016 @ 3:00 pm

A painterly exploration of erotic Austrian Expressionism through the lens of 21st Century Public Domain.

A series of erotic watercolours by Tom Turner. These works are a tribute to the early 20th century Austrian artist Egon Schiele and his painterly devices. Turner’s work expands upon Schiele’s Freudian themes whilst also investigating where an enlightened society of the 21st century is located with respect to contemporary sexuality.

Born in Wellington in 1963, Tom Turner was best known for painterly works prior to commencing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Quay School of the Arts in 2006. He graduated in 2009 majoring in sculpture, gaining recognition for his video works and also for sculptural works created from his social sculpture projects. Turner completed his Master of Art & Design at Auckland University of Technology in 2013, receiving a graduate study award for his social sculpture project titled New Zealand’s Wailing Wall. He returned to his love for paint in 2014 and has sought to amalgamate his painterly passion with social sculpture for this exhibition.
