Tūrangawaewae – Sense of Place opened in the weekend and what a turn out! The gallery was buzzing and one of the most popular areas was our community photo wall. We’ve had a lot of people contribute but we want more! Let’s fill up every inch of that white wall. Please bring in your old and new photographs that reference your identity, history, heritage, memory, community and represent your sense of place.
Along with the photo wall in the main gallery we have a series of portrait photographs of the people and places of Devonport by Lia Kent Mackillop on display. These images have been selected from Tūrangawaewae – Sense of Place, a new limited edition publication exploring the history, geography and demography of the Devonport community; the components that contribute to its distinct identity. It celebrates the people who have worked to build this community and draws to attention the fact that meaningful communities don’t just happen but are made and evolve through continuous participation.
In the Vernacular Lounge gallery, Issue Two of The Vernacularist is on display. Insightful personal examinations of the essence, meaning, existence and validity of ‘true community’ in our age create the 60 pages of Part One and 41 pages of Part Two of this special issue of The Vernacularist. The culmination of the two parts results in an honest, personal and often surprising commentary on what community means today.
And in the Project Space we have an installation about pre-colonial Devonport. The exhibition closes on the 10th of July, don’t miss this opportunity to learn about, share and interact with your community.
